Your Semi Is Down. Here Is What Happens Next.
Semi truck towing is a different job from towing a pickup. A tractor weighs a lot on its own. Add a loaded trailer and the whole combination can reach tens of thousands of pounds, with air brakes that lock when pressure drops. When a semi stops on I-40 near Jackson, we need to know what is behind the cab before we decide how to move it.
Tractor, trailer or both
There are three common jobs. Sometimes only the tractor is dead, and we tow it away while the trailer is dropped or picked up by another tractor. Sometimes the trailer has the problem, with a damaged axle or a bad tire set, and the tractor can pull it slowly to a safe spot. Sometimes the whole combination has to move, which takes a heavy wrecker or two. Say which one you have.
Towing on a driveline
A tractor with a failed engine or transmission cannot be towed with the wheels turning. We may pull the drive shafts or axle shafts, or lift the drive axles off the ground. A tractor with air-ride suspension, a long wheelbase or a sleeper adds to the care needed. The driver's description of the failure helps.
Truck stops as a safe destination
If the unit can still limp, a nearby truck stop can be a smart first stop. The Pilot at Exit 85 lists a CAT scale and truck parking. The Love's at Exit 87 lists 108 truck parking spaces, tire services and a CAT scale. We can tow a disabled unit to either one or to a shop you name. That choice is yours.
Brakes, air and spring brakes
When a tractor loses air, the spring brakes apply. To move it, we have to release them, usually with the wrecker's air supply or by caging the brakes. We do this before lifting. If the problem is a seized brake or an air leak at the trailer, we tell you what we found before moving.
Broker and fleet details
Many semi calls are paid by a fleet, a broker or an insurer rather than the driver. Give us the company name, the dispatcher's contact and any claim number. Your fleet may require a reference on the invoice, a photo of the unit or a signed work order. Tell us and we will handle it.
Drivers away from home
A lot of the drivers we help are not from here. They are hauling through on I-40 between Memphis and Nashville with a delivery window and an unfamiliar town. We keep it simple: where are you, what is it, what does it need, and who is paying.
What to have ready when you call
- Exact location. Interstate or highway, direction of travel, exit or mile marker, and the nearest cross road.
- The unit. Tractor-trailer, straight truck, bus, RV, dump truck or equipment, and the weight class.
- Loaded or empty. What the cargo is, and whether any of it is hazmat.
- What happened. Mechanical failure, flat tires, a slide-off, a rollover or a crash.
- Who is paying. The driver, a fleet, an insurer or a broker, and a claim or PO number if you have one.

Semi Truck Towing Questions
Can you tow my semi with the trailer attached?
Often yes. It depends on the weight, the load and what failed. A heavy wrecker or two may be needed. Describe the unit on the call.
What if my brakes are locked?
That is common when a tractor loses air. We release or cage the spring brakes before lifting.
Do you pull the drive shaft?
When the unit has a driveline failure and the wheels cannot turn freely, yes. This prevents more damage.
Can you take my truck to a specific shop?
Yes. Give us the shop name and address, and we price the mileage from your location.
